Tata Mumbai Marathon: Dedicated to the Spirit of Mumbai

Mumbai always gives me a high!

I was born in the Himalayas and I matured at sea, but it was the city of Mumbai where I discovered my soul. It has been more than twenty years since I first arrived on the shores of this megacity. Since the very first day, this city has only given me something to be excited and happy about - be it joy, life’s experience or experiences of a lifetime, love of my life, lots of fun, new challenges, new barriers to cross and go beyond, new friends and new passion. One of the most significant of them has been the craze of road running.

The zest and enthusiasm of runners and cyclists during the morning runs and rides along the various favourite locations are infectious! One can find them everywhere - Marine Drive, Peddar Road, Eastern Express Highway, Worli Sea Face, Shivaji Park to name a few. They motivate us to just get on the road and join them.  These are a few indicators of the pulse of this magnanimous city. One can find, runners, cyclists, walkers, joggers, yogis, athletes on these locations at any time of the day and night! As William Shakespeare famously said “What is the city but the people?” in the case of our beloved city - these athletes define a very unique characteristic of all Mumbaikars - resilience and determination.

Essentially, one sporting event which has become symbolic of Mumbai, Mumbaikars and their spirit is Tata Mumbai Marathon. Held every year on the third Sunday of January, TMM is the largest mass sports event in Asia and fifth-largest marathon in the world. It has revolutionized running culture not only in Mumbai but also in India.

TMM truly demonstrates the essence and effervescence of Mumbai. When thousands of runners take on the grand vistas and boulevards of Mumbai; be it Worli-Bandra Sea-link over the sea or Marine Drive along the sea, it is like an ocean of humanity running together, encouraging each other, cheering each other up. The camera cannot do complete justice to the human spirit which can only be felt and experienced in its wholesomeness.

One gets to witness the warmth and affection of the city along the route, which is filled with volunteers, residents, from senior citizens to toddlers, cheering for Mumbai, offering water, lime juice, snacks to the sweating runners.

The direct or indirect involvement of almost each and every Mumbaikar in some way or the other, including those who graciously allow roads to be restricted to vehicular traffic for ensuring safe running routes, special BEST buses, local trains, cab services that make sure runners reach the starting lines of their respective races in time, only indicates the pride the city has in supporting its people, its guests and its runners who gather here from all over the world. This resolve and demonstration of warmth, affection and hospitality corroborates the indomitable spirit of this great city.

Currently the world is facing testing times. However, with the resolve and determination which is synonymous with the spirit of this megapolis, we will tide through this too with flying colours. Till then let us keep up the faith and look forward to the next edition of Tata Mumbai Marathon.
